Acupuncture Improves IUI Cycle Success

Acupuncture Improves IUI Cycle Success

What is IUI?

IUI, or intrauterine insemination, is a common medical procedure done to help couples conceive. In this process, washed, concentrated sperm is inserted into the uterus at ovulation, to help increase the sperm’s ability to fertilize an egg. This procedure bypasses the sperm’s need to travel through the cervix, thereby increasing chances of conception. IUI cycles are often augmented by the use of medications that induce ovulation.

Compared to IVF, or in vitro fertilization, IUI is less invasive and less expensive. IUI is recommended for couples with poor sperm motility, erectile dysfunction, unexplained infertility, or inadequate cervical mucus. It is also used in cases of sperm donation. Many people who choose to do IUI cycles are hoping to avoid IVF, and are wondering how they can improve their chance of success.

Acupuncture Improves IUI Cycle Success

Acupuncture improves IUI cycle success by using a multi-faceted approach. Regular acupuncture treatments can increase the circulation of blood to the follicles and uterus, thus promoting healthy ovulation and increasing the quality of the uterine lining.

Acupuncture lowers levels of stress hormones known to decrease fertility in both women and men. When ovulation induction medications are used, acupuncture can increase pelvic blood flow to allow the necessary hormones to reach the ovaries, increasing egg quality. Acupuncture can also help with male factor fertility concerns, such as poor sperm morphology and motility.
