Did you know acupuncture is effective for vulvar pain?
You may not think of it as an option, but acupuncture for vulvar pain can be an effective treatment.
I wrote a guest post for my colleagues over at the YinOva Center about this pain condition that affects one in four women: chronic vulvar pain. Vulvar pain not only affects intimacy, but can prevent one from wearing certain types of clothing, or prevent activities like riding a bike. Here in Portland not being able to ride your bike is serious business.
There are many causes to vulvar pain, but acupuncture can help reduce the pain so you can get back to your life. You can read the post here.
In addition to my work with reproductive medicine, I also treat pelvic pain and vulvar pain conditions. Over the years, I noticed that some women with fertility challenges also reported pain with intercourse.
This led me to developing a research project to find out how effective acupuncture is as a treatment for vulvar pain due to vestibulodynia. It is currently underway. Many thanks to the National Vulvodynia Association, Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, and the Oregon Health and Science University Women’s Health Research Unit for their support of the project.
